The Internet Talks Jennifer Hepler, BioWare, and Gamer Entitlement
There have been a number of articles, all overwhelmingly in support of BioWare and Jennifer Hepler, since this situation blew up on the weekend. I’ve listed some of the notable ones below.
Forbes - The Changing Face of Games: Feeling Angry and Ignored, Fans Look for Someone to Blame
Gamespot - The Dangers of Gamer Entitlement
FemPop - Creepy Internet Stalkers Harass Female Video Game Designer for Months
zConnection - When The Internet Fought Jennifer Hepler
The Mary Sue - Inclusion: What Jennifer Hepler’s Story is All About
Atomic - This is why gamers can’t have nice things - the Jennifer Hepler ‘debate’
Kotaku Australia - BioWare Writer Describes Her Gaming Tastes; Angry Gamers Call Her A ‘Cancer’
Destructoid - BioWare writer’s vagina versus the Internet
Awesome. A+, especially the Forbes article.
That Forbes article is spot on. I’m also so glad to see that the overwhelming action on this is calling these assholes on their shit.
The Forbes article is great.

Also, I’m not sure I buy the idea that men in the industry get this kind of abuse. Of course, I may be wrong – so let’s play burden of proof. Let’s think of a male games writer. Now let’s see if we can find a picture of him with a couple of apparently fabricated quotes, some interview material dug up from a five-year old interview on a defunct website and the legend CANCER INFECTION BLIGHT VERMIN DISEASE SEWAGE PLAGUE WASTE. Then let’s find the days-long stream of abuse on Twitter which dwells on his physical appearance and sexual tastes as well as his qualities as a writer (despite insistence that the issue is the _writing_). There are plenty of men in games, so it should be pretty easy to find something like this, right?
